'Rough Collies of Distinction' by Iris Combe, Dareen Bridge & Pat Hutchinson

Following the book's successful launch at Crufts in May 2001, and numerous excellent reviews since, we have been discussing ways in which the book can be kept up to date.  It is obvious that a 'Collie of Distinction' takes several years to manifest itself either as an outstanding show winner or producer of note, and therefore it would not be feasible to attempt a second edition for at least twenty years. However we are determined that the record should be updated whenever possible and therefore propose to keep readers  informed by providing them with additional material on this web site.

Amendments/Additions to the original publication:

1889 Champion Ormskirk Charlie (page 30)

The following two quotations have very recently come into the authors' possession and  they serve to illustrate Charlie's successful working abilities:

"SHEEP DOG TRIALS IN GERMANY........
Mr George Barcroft,......... well known in the Ramsbottom and Rossendale districts ......has been in Germany during the week, and has competed successfully with other dogs in sheep dog trials. The following extract from the 'Daily News' will be read with interest: 'German Collie Club Trials - Success of English dogs - For the first time in the history of the club, sheep dog trials have been held at the annual show of the German
Collie Club, which terminated at Frankfurt-on-the-Main on Sunday. C H Wheeler, of Birmingham, judged, and although the English dogs were severely handicapped by the foreign conditions of working, and the nature of the trial ground, they did remarkably well, and quite astounded the select attendance which included all the leading Collie breeders in Germany. The first prize and gold medal of the promoting society was won by Mr G Barcroft's 'White Bob'.......... beating Mr R S Piggin's Ormskirk Charlie from Long Eaton, Notts. The splendid working of the English dogs created a most favourable impression....." (
The 'Ramsbottom Observer' of 4 June 1897)

" 'Sheep-dog Trials, and How They are Conducted' by Anglo-Manxman.
.....It has been argued by many that the present type of show collie is unfitted for work, but anyone who has seen the well-known Ormskirk Charlie, a son of the famous collie Christopher, who sold for Ł1,000, working, would readily be convinced of the error entertained on this point. This dog, a winner at almost every trial, is indeed a marvel, and displays such wonderful intelligence that is almost human...." (The Ludgate Magazine, May 1899).

At the time of the book's publication, in May 2001, Frosty had already amassed twenty Challenge Certificates and on gaining his twenty-third at Southern Counties 2001 became the breed Challenge Certificate record holder. He was awarded his twenty-eighth Challenge Certificate1 at Crufts 2002 where he entered the record books again, this time completing a 'hat trick' of Crufts Best of Breed awards between 2000 and 2002.

His twenty-ninth came sixteen months later, at the East Anglian Collie Association's Championship Show. Frosty came out as a veteran to take his thirtieth Challenge Certificate at Crufts 2004, followed by his thirty first at Bath two months later.

Frosty was awarded his thirty-second (and last) Challenge Certificate at Yorkshire Collie Club's Championship Show in September 2005, aged nine.

Sadly, he developed inoperable intestinal cancer and was given sleep on 5 March 2007, aged ten and a half years.

Although not widely used at stud, Frosty's influence will continue through his successful grandchildren - HK Ch Demelewis Jade Moon at Corydon, Demelewis Raven Moon 1CC, Demelewis Muffin Moon With Corydon, and Demelewis Dark Moon Driftin' Over Corydon JW, 2CC's.

Footnote:
Thirty-two of Frosty's Challenge Certificates were awarded by thirty-one different judges, and on twenty-six of those occasions he went on to win Best of Breed. He also won 10 Reserve Challenge Certificates and his Junior Warrant.
